What is Technical SEO in Simple Terms?

Technical SEO is a set of configurations that help search engines efficiently crawl, index, and understand your website. It’s not about the text; it’s about the “inner workings”: speed, structure, code, and security.

It’s like the foundation of a house. You can decorate the walls and furnish the rooms, but without a solid foundation, none of that matters.

Typical Problems

Technical errors occur even on well-designed websites. Here are the most common ones, along with explanations of why they are critical:

  • Pages blocked from indexing: Due to a incorrectly configured robots.txt file or a noindex meta tag, search engines cannot crawl important pages. As a result, they don’t appear in search results and don’t bring traffic.
  • Slow loading due to large images: If a website uses unoptimized or excessively large images, Google considers speed a ranking factor.
  • Duplicate content on different URLs: The same text may appear on multiple pages (e.g., /page, /page?utm=, or /page/index.html).
  • Incorrect canonicals and redirects: A canonical tag should point to the “main” version of a page. If it’s set incorrectly, Google might not index the desired page. The same applies to redirects: incorrect or cyclical redirects harm navigation and SEO.
  • Lack of mobile version or responsiveness: If a site doesn’t work well on smartphones, Google lowers its ranking in mobile search results. Given that more than half of users access sites from their phones, this directly impacts traffic.

Each of these issues signals that technical SEO requires attention. Timely detection and correction of errors help a website not just survive, but grow in search rankings.

  • Compress images before uploading.
  • Use Search Console to analyze indexing.
  • Remove duplicates and implement redirects if technically feasible.
